Weddings Access All Areas?
With Celebrant Kathryn
I’m really excited to be taking another step in heightening awareness of how we all can address the lack of representation and access of people who are disabled, neurodivergent, living with chronic illness, managing their mental health or all of the above(!) in the wedding industry. Those getting married (or trying to!) and those who are the amazing suppliers themselves!
As well as having the privilege of being a Humanist Wedding Celebrant, I’m also a proudly Disabled Woman and have been active increasing awareness of the lack of accessibility & representation of Disabled People in the wedding industry and wedding media - both couples and us suppliers from the start on my career as a celebrant.
From January 2022, I’m launching a series of Instagram Lives - “Weddings, Access All Areas?” Where I’ll be chatting 1:1 with a fabulous wedding supplier about their lived experience and/or representation of Disabled People in the Wedding Industry. Weddings Access all Areas -will be live on Instagram monthly from January to May (picking back up after the wedding season)- the third Tuesday evening of each month. I’ve got some awesome, lovely guests lined up. Here’s who we’ve got lined up so far:
January 18th 2022 - Sophie Colligan - Sophie Colligan Ceremonies
February 15th 2022- Ky Richardson - LGBTQ+ Equality Weddings and The Career Queer
March 21st 2022- Mercedes Gale - Wedding Stylist of @4YaParty
April 19th 2022- Lily Jones - Wedding Planner at Lily Jones Events and Lead for Quirky Wedding Fayre
May 17th 2022- To be announced!
If you want to be involved - either as a supplier or if you’ve planned a wedding as a Disabled Person/living with chronic illness/as a neurodivergent person or someone managing your mental health drop me a line! I’d love to hear from you!
I hope you’ll join me in thinking about how we can work towards weddings being access all areas!
PS - Of course - I’m not ignoring the fact we don’t even have marriage equality for disabled people. This is a much bigger fight that I’m committed to contributing to in future - I just need to find a way to balance it with my own energies.
